SPLENDID HORNS

The Impala is a medium-sized antelope found in eastern and southern Africa. The Impala reaches 28-36 inches at the shoulder and weighs 88-168 pounds. It features a glossy, reddish brown coat and the males have 2 splendid horns that can reach up to 36 inches in length.

  • This Cape Buffalo was enjoying a nap when we arrived. Cape buffalo are Africa's bovids. The adult buffalo's horns are its characteristic feature; they have fused bases, forming a continuous bone shiled across the top of the head.

  • The Baboon has a unique dog-like snout unlike most other monkeys. They have powerful jaws with sharp canine teeth, close-set eyes, think fur, short tails and a rough, callused buttocks called ischial callosities. These calluses are nerveless, hairless pads of skin that provide for the sitting comfort of the baboon.
  • This African lioness lives in a pride which is a very confined and limited group of lions. Females form the stable social unit in a pride and do not tolerate outside females. Membership only changes with births and death of lionesses.
  • Prides of lions can consist of up to 30 animals, however the average pride consist of around fifteen lions; including several adult females, up to four males (known as a coalition) and their cubs of both sexes.
  • Lions spend much of their time resting and are inactive for approximately 20 per day. Although lions can be active at any time, their activity generally peaks after dusk with a period of socializing, grooming and defecating. Hunting usually takes place in the night hours as they are excellent adapting to the nighttime vision requirements.
