The metabolism of hummingbirds can slow at night or at any time when food is not readily available: the birds enter a hibernation-like deep-sleep state (known as torpor) to prevent energy reserves from falling to a critical level.

  • In preparation of impending birth, the female hummingbird will build a small, cup-shaped nest which rests in the branch of a bush or tree. Nest size ranges from the size of a half a walnut shell to several centimeters in diameter. The males do not take part in the nesting or chick rearing process.
