MALE QUAIL

The California Quail is a small ground-dwelling bird in North America. These birds have a curving crest or plume, made of six feathers that droop forward. There are thought to be more than 15 different parts of the world and all have slightly different appearances depending on how they have adapted to their environment. Quails are omnivorous animals, they tend to have a primarily vegetarian diet eating seeds, wheat, barley, flowers and fruits but they will also eat insects such as worms and grasshoppers. Around 95% of the diet is thought to consist of plant matter.

  • In preparation of impending birth, the female hummingbird will build a small, cup-shaped nest which rests in the branch of a bush or tree. Nest size ranges from the size of a half a walnut shell to several centimeters in diameter. The males do not take part in the nesting or chick rearing process.
