EMPEROR TAMARIN--THE MOUSTACHE MONKEY

The Emperor Tamarin live predominately in the Amazonian lowland and lower montane rain forests. They live in groups ranging from 2 to 8, but sometimes more. The group consists of an extended family group, usually with only one breeding female. They feed on fruits and flowers, as well as gums and saps. Many also eat animal prey such as insects and frogs, depending on the area that they are living in.

  • Macaws eat a variety of foods including seeds, nuts, fruits, pal fruits, leaves, flowers and stems. Wild species may forage widely, over 100 km for some of the larger species. Some foods eaten by Macaws contain toxins which they cannot digest. It has been suggested that parrots and macaws in the Amazon Basin eat clay from exposed river banks to neutralize these toxins.
