LOVE BIRDS

The majority of Macaws are now endangered in the wild and a few are extinct. The greatest problems threatening the macaw population are the rapid rate of deforestation and trapping for the bird trade.

  • The macaw is a variety of parrot with proportionately larger beaks, and long tails. The Macaws are native to Central America and North America (Mexico), South America an dformerly the Caribbean. Most species are associated with forests, especially rain forests, but others prefer woodland or savannah-like habitats.

  • Macaws eat a variety of foods including seeds, nuts, fruits, pal fruits, leaves, flowers and stems. Wild species may forage widely, over 100 km for some of the larger species. Some foods eaten by Macaws contain toxins which they cannot digest. It has been suggested that parrots and macaws in the Amazon Basin eat clay from exposed river banks to neutralize these toxins.
